Description
Not actually over THE River Styx.... but read on....
This bridge is over the Cuyahoga River as seen from the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, one of the oldest, longest and most scenic tourist excursion railways in the country. Speeding along, watching the scenery go by is mesmerizing. With the blurred foreground frozen in time and in an unexpected color palette, the view from the train's window made for a wonderful surrealistic image.
I was surprised to discover that what I thought was a clever title actually exists - and it is not far from this same area and has a connection to the Erie Railroad! There is a real bridge over River Styx Road in Medina County and it is surrounded by mystery. In 1899, Railroad Engineer Alexander Logan ran Train No. 5 along the Erie Railroad near the River Styx Bridge, traveling at nearly 80 miles per hour. The engine mysteriously jumped its tracks, turned over and crushed the engineer to death. No one knows what caused the train to derail, but the engineer's heroic decision to stay on the train and steer the engine saved the lives of others on board. When his body was recovered, his hand was still clutched to the throttle. Newspaper articles revealed that two weeks before, Logan confided to his colleagues that he believed he would die on that engine.
That I would create this image and pick this title without knowing any of this....well, it's eerie, no?
