Description
The intricate beauty of a single blossom. The architecture and artistry of an orchid defies description. And when even a thousand words would not be enough, a picture can say it all.
I am equally astounded by the views we can create with the camera - like this one. That in bright sunlit surroundings, I can take a picture of a potted plant, weighted down with dozens of blossoms, and get a shot of a single flower emerging out of darkness is nothing short of spectacular. I am in awe of the capabilities of the camera, and amused at the lengths I will go to for a great shot.
I put the large potted plant on the top platform of an eight foot ladder I took outside and kept moving around - standing on the ladder, under the ladder, hanging from the ladder, etc. - until the natural light produced this result. With only light as my assistant, I wanted to be honest and true to my subjet - and it never occurred to me to pick this blossom and place it where I could have gotten this shot easily!
Honored to have won 3rd Place in the Orchid Beauty contest.

Excellent use of space and contrast. By using the black background you really have pulled out the white in the flower. This truly allows it too flow into the color at the center and allows the eye to go where you want it to.
