Looking like an enameled brooch, the Scarlet and Green Leafhopper is only about 3/8" (8-9 mm) long. The little jewel specializes in literally sucking the life out of plants and then releasing a chemical that makes the leaf wilt and die. Beauty and Beast in one fascinating little package!
Not only was he unbelievable to see, but I was delighted that he landed on a leaf which mirrored the flipside of his shape.
I was honored to have this image be selected, out of 2,000 photos, for the March 2013 issue of Under the Hat Photography Magazine.
The little devil has also graced the feature pages of many Fine Art America groups.
