Description
As I parked my car, I noticed the beautiful masked face looking out of the open window of the van next to me. His loving gaze was fixed on the entrance of the Home Depot where his companion disappeared moments before.
I just love his sweet expression and his adorable markings! I assumed he was a Siberian Husky until I looked closer at the pictures I took of him. His eyes were brown. Alaskan malamutes always have brown eyes, while Huskies can have blue or brown or even one of each. The mask on his face, or the monk's cap markings, is actually a distinguishing feature of both. His ears were set more on the side of his head than on the top, and the portion of his tail that I could see inside the car was like plumes of long fur over his back.
This sweet patient dog is an Alaskan Malamute, the largest and oldest of the Arctic sled dogs. Unlike his smaller and more agile cousin the Siberian Husky which was bred for speed, the Malamute is stockier and stronger as he was designed to carry large loads over long distances. He is also a cousin to the other two Arctic breeds, the Samoyed and the American Eskimo dog.

I wanted to say I have a very beautiful, attentive Chow/Akita mix that makes similar expressions of adoration and unconditional love. His name is "Bodhi" - short for Bodhisattva of course. I'll have to dig out one of his photos to publish someday.. . Thanks for this inspiration!
Andrea Lazar replied:
Judy - thanks for your comments. I bet your Bodhi is a great looking dog with that combination. Would be nice to shee his photo!

This bodhisattva expression you captured so well is to die for! Thanks for the distinction between the similar breeds too - very helpful. I wish we could have these dogs in Arizona but it's too hot here!

Really stunning! I believe this is a malamute, but I'm not 100% sure :) L/F
Andrea Lazar replied:
yes, I think so, too, as I explained in the description, from his ears and his tail. But it was his beautiful face and loving gaze that melted my heart.
