Description
With a wingspan of almost 6", this Cairns Birdwing (Ornithoptera priamus) is the largest Australian butterfly and belongs to the family of birdwings, named after their birdlike flight, which includes some of the largest butterflies in the world.
After it posed for this portrait at the Butterfly Conservatory of the Niagara Falls Botanical Gardens, despite its amazing colors and distinctive markings, I had a hard time identifying it. But, as I looked at hundreds of pictures of them, I have learned a lot more about butterflies! Also, the next time I fancy one of more than 2,000 tropical butterflies floating around in the largest enclosed butterfly conservatory in North America, I will read the signs identifying them!
